A note on accessibility for trainings

Accessibility is important to me and there will also be limits to what I can do as a disabled sole trader who works part time. This is a summary of what I currently offer when delivering a training.

Please note that was is available when I run a private training will be different to what is available in settings such as a conference, as then I do not have as much control over the environment.

Format:

  • In person trainings - when selecting a location for trainings I do my best to ensure they are wheelchair accessible with access to a disabled toilet and a kitchen. Depending on the room configuration I will usually set out tables and chairs in view of a screen which will have the slides on it. There will also usually be a resource table with various fidgets, and I try to provide gluten and dairy free snacks. If you have specific access needs then please let me know when or before you book.

  • Online trainings - I use Zoom with closed captions turned on. Slides will be visible on the screen and I will stop sharing and recording for any discussion portions. It supports me if people have their cameras on as then I have real time visual feedback from participants, and I also know that some people’s support need is to have theirs off, so it’s ok to have your camera off! Trainings are usually recorded, recordings and a transcript are sent out after a training session. I do my best to provide slides ahead of time, if this does not happen, they will be sent out afterwards.

Information and communication:

  • I send out thorough emails with event information, times, locations (including photos), zoom link if applicable and a link to any resources, as well as some suggestions for what to bring. Multiple reminder emails will also be sent.

  • Due to the rising cost of printing I can no longer provide printed copies of slides to in person training attendees. If there is an activities booklet for a training I will provide this.

  • Discussion during trainings is encouraged, but I will never force anyone to speak who doesn’t want to or call on specific people. You can speak or write down questions, or for online trainings use the chat box.

Accommodations and supports:

  • I try and use universal design principles to anticipate and provide for various needs, while also supporting myself. But of course everyone is different. If you have any specific accommodation needs please let me know and I will let you know what I can do.
