Values Exploration for Us and Our Work
Would you like to learn more about what values are and how to use them in practice? Knowing and understanding our values can increase meaning and purposeful direction for ourselves and our clients. This on demand training, is aimed at health professionals, outlining my values practice and process; why this work is so important; what values are and what they aren't; power, privilege and intersectionality; and practical ideas for exploring your values and moving in valued directions.
Course Introduction
Values are our heart’s deepest desires for how we want to behave as a human being and how we want to show up in the world. Values can be like a roadmap, give our lives meaning, and give us something to move towards. Supporting people to explore their values can help with determining priorities, guiding choices and actions, and indicating areas of misalignment. I might ask questions like: what’s important to you? What makes you feel proud?
Values work can be foundational for supporting people to connect with what is important to them and then use this knowledge to build a value-driven life. I’ve also found it helpful personally to know my values so I can get closer to living the life that I want (in ways that are possible with physical and mental health limitations) and prioritise where I spend my time and energy.
This on demand training is an introduction to values work. It covers what values are, my process of exploring using this work in practice and a range of practical activities and additional resources for using values for yourself and with clients (if you work with others).
It is for anyone in a health, education or helping profession who is interested in learning more about exploring values and wants some concrete ideas for how to use them in practice.

Knowing and understanding our values can increase meaning and purposeful direction for ourselves and our clients. However, values work is often presented in the abstract when people might need more concrete representations. It’s also important to consider that many values exercises come from individualistic Western traditions and use words that may not relate across cultures. We can explore ways to increase accessibility and adaptability across cultures and other intersectionalities.
